My Review:
This book hit home on many levels for me. I resonated with Hannah's struggles about what she believed about herself. Yet she never gave up, her dedication and persistence were inspiring. I also really enjoyed hanging out in this small town. I love the vibes of a good small town, and a lot of small businesses. The faith elements of the story were very strong and on point. I think when we struggle and can turn our backs on the Lord, He is going to continuously guide us back to Him. Luke may be struggling in his relationship with the Lord, but we get to see that wrestling in real time.
Now for the part that is probably a spoiler, although I feel like we know it's coming pretty early on. The part where Gran dies was very hard for me to read. I lost my mom a few months ago to cancer and this part of the book hit hard. It was like reliving that loss over again, but in a cathartic and beautiful way. It was still hard, but I had peace when I lost her and I still have peace from the Lord. I barely made it through this part of the book though, I had to set it down and come back to it, because I knew it was going to be difficult.
Yet this story was good and beautifully written. I liked the slower pace, and how there was plot moving the story forward, but it was mostly character driven. Those are my favorite books. I will definitely have to read more from this author.
A solid four stars from me.
Quote Time:
I had a few quotes to choose from, but this is the one I'm going to share:
Bob nodded, rubbing his chin. "Trusting when we don't understand is never easy. But we have to believe His Word. To trust that He knows what's best. He doesn't mind your questions, son. But don't go thinking you know better than He does. He loves you. Created you. Knows the beginning and the end."
It can be so incredibly hard to trust, especially when it is painful and sorrowful. Yet His ways are better than ours, forever and always. We can only see a small snippet of the picture, and surrendering to Him is worth it all, because the joy and peace He gives us truly surpasses understanding.
I want to thank the publisher for a copy of this book to read, with no expectations of a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

More from Jodie:
It's been such a joy to set a series in the town where I graduated from college almost 40 years ago. I'm so thankful my husband suggested it, as it's been a lot of fun digging into the history of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, and the surrounding area during the 19th century. Before this series, all my other books had settings in the Mid-west- Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas.
When I started writing the first book, Abigail's Pursuit, quite a number of years ago, I never intended to create a series about prodigals, let alone experience the pain of it in my life...but God knew what the future held. While each of the books in this Time to Come Home Series revolves around the common theme of a prodigal, each of the tales is a stand-alone. My prayer is for thos who have children who have wandered away, or perhaps were once prodigals themselves, or even others who enjoy Christian historical romance with strong spiritual themes- that each of these groups find encouragement through reading this series.
Hannah's Quest was exciting to write as I incorporated information about one of the oldest continually run hardware stores in PA that is still operating to this day, even though it's changed names various times through the years. I hope you'll enjoy stepping back in time to a small town in south-central PA where faith and family are celebrated.

ReplyDeleteI like the More from Jodie segment.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear the part about Gran was hard for you. It was difficult to write as it brought up memories from many years ago when my dear mother-in-law passed away. God often uses our pain though. Thank you for your review.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry that the section about Gran dying was difficult for you, and I'm sorry to hear of your recent loss too. Death is never easy. Know that I'm praying for you.
