Today is release day for The Cost of the Crown by Joy Crain! I was blessed with a copy to read and all thoughts and opinions are my own. With that said I absolutely loved and adored this book. I was instantly hooked. As I have been in a reading slump this past year, it was so nice to not desire to put a book down. I even delayed the start to our homeschool day so that I could finish the book. I was reading while I cooked breakfast because I just had to know what was going to happen. I was completely invested in the characters.
We begin the story with Missy who is a journalist and also helps her aunt in her aunt's bakery. She lives in California and has since her dad asked her aunt to raise her when she was younger. She is afforded an opportunity to go to the southeast country of Andelar and spend some time with the royal family and her father. On the way to Andelar she meets Aiden who is also on his way to Andelar. Aiden is on his way back from a missions trip to Africa to his home and his secret identity as a prince. He has some pretty major decisions ahead of him and meeting Missy only complicates his already complicated feelings about one day becoming king. We follow them on their journey of getting to know each other.
We get both Aiden's and Missy's perspectives throughout the story, which in my opinion makes for a more well rounded story. I absolutely loved getting to know the country of Andelar, as well as its citizens. God is an integral part of their lives and there is so much depth to the story. We all know how some romances can be more fluff, this is not one of those stories. There was questioning and wrestling with decisions and figuring out how the romance may or may not fit into their lives. This was a clean romance that did not focus on the physical attraction but on getting to truly know one another. Yet you could also tell the chemistry was there, which I do think is important in a romance. It just wasn't in your face about the physical side of it. This book was most definitely a breath of fresh air and I can't wait to add a physical copy on my shelf and see what happens next in Andelar. I'm really hoping we get a story for each of Aiden's siblings. We will see!
